Decreasing Gout Risk
Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis, commonly affecting those aged 60 and higher. Associated with high levels of uric acid, gout is typically characterized by pain and redness in the joints. Many health professionals agree that gout risk can be lowered by managing one’s diet, which involves reducing foods and drinks high in purine from one’s food intake. These foods include alcohol, red meat, organ meat such as liver or kidney, certain seafoods, drinks high in fructose, and processed foods. Lowering one’s uric acid levels is key in reducing gout risk.
Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

How Orthotics Help Your Feet
Your feet have the potential to impact nearly every part of your body. If there is a problem with them, the effects can range from minor to extremely serious. Orthotics can solve some of the most common issues you may have with you feet. Overpronation is when the foot leans inward, causing an uneven distribution of weight as you walk. Underpronation is just the opposite. This occurs when your foot leans to the outside. Improper distribution of weight results here as well. Both of these conditions can be improved by wearing properly fitted orthotics. The orthotics promote alignment by supporting the arch, absorbing shock, and essentially controlling how the foot hits the ground.
If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Are Orthotics?
Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.
Over-the-Counter Inserts
Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.
Prescription Orthotics
If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.
If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

Wearing Proper Footwear Key to Elderly Foot Care
A recent study conducted on the elderly found that those who do not wear proper footwear tend to seek medical treatment for their feet more often and suffer a lower quality of life. According to Daniel Lopez, one of the lead scientists of the study, improper shoes are often worn due to people’s lifestyles at this later stage in life. Combined with various chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, improper footwear causes an increase in foot problems in the elderly. Data from the study concluded that pain and foot function were detrimentally affected.
Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
The Elderly and Their Feet
As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.
Common Conditions
- Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
- Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
- Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
- Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
- Shoes that don’t fit properly
- Pressure sores
- Loss of circulation in legs & feet
- Edema & swelling of feet and ankles
Susceptible Infections
Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Biologic Drugs May Aid in Slowing Rheumatoid Arthritis
For those with rheumatoid arthritis, the risk of heart attacks is at least 60 percent higher than those without the condition “thought to be linked to the inflammation caused by the disease on affected joints.” As rheumatoid arthritis leads to the inflammation, swelling, and potential immobility of our body’s joints, there are several medical treatments such as biologic drugs that can be used to slow down the deterioration of the joints from this autoimmune disease. Researchers from the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register for Rheumatoid Arthritis (BSRBR-RA) conducted a study on rheumatoid arthritis patients, determining that tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) drugs helped to eliminate the proteins that led to inflammation. These drugs reduced the risk of heart attacks by “almost 40 percent,” compared to those who were only taking synthetic disease modifying therapies (sDMARD), which are used to slow down the progression of deterioration of joints.
Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Dr. Christine Quinn of New Jersey. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.
Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet
Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.
Symptoms
- Swelling and pain in the feet
- Stiffness in the feet
- Pain on the ball or sole of feet
- Joint shift and deformation
Diagnosis
Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
