What is a Podiatrist?
People who are interested in pursuing a podiatric career are attracted to learning about the treatments of foot conditions and the compassion in treating patients with specific foot disorders. Doctors who are involved in this type of medicine may perform surgery, prescribe medications, and fit for custom-made orthotics. Research has shown that certain diseases may originally be seen in the feet, and this type of medical professional may often recognize these potentially serious health concerns. Many podiatrists have the choice to practice in hospitals, work in health departments, or to open their own podiatric office, which may be enticing if having a flexible work schedule is desired. This may occur as a result from an injury or trauma the foot endures, possibly due to performing repetitive motions. There are several symptoms that are associated with this condition. Many patients will notice a burning or tingling sensation in their foot and may also be accompanied by a shooting pain in the ankle. If you have injured your foot or have pain in the ankle that develops gradually, it’s suggested to speak with a podiatrist so a proper diagnosis can be performed, and the correct treatment can begin.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.
Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
- Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
- At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.
The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
- Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
- The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
- If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.
A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Foot Conditions That Are Associated With Running
Many people who enjoy running may experience common foot conditions that may be associated with this sport. A portion of the foot that is commonly affected is the the plantar fascia. This is identified as the tissue that is located on the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. If this should become torn or injured, it will most likely produce severe pain and discomfort, and is referred to as plantar fasciitis. A condition known as metatarsalgia may be a result of intense running, and most often affects the middle toes. Patients have equated this discomfort to feeling like there are small stones in their shoes or on the soles of the feet. Additionally, an uncomfortable condition known as Morton’s neuroma may be mistaken with metatarsalgia, but will have additional symptoms that may include burning, tingling, or sharp pains in the toes and surrounding area. It is suggested to consult with a podiatrist if you are experiencing any of these ailments so proper treatment can begin.

Symptoms Of Athlete’s Foot
One of the most common fungal infections that affects the feet, is known as athlete’s foot. The symptoms that are associated with this condition may consist of skin that is red and itchy, and often appears between the toes or on the bottom of the feet. The technical name for this condition is known as tinea pedis, but most people refer to it as athlete’s foot. This contagious fungus is typically found in warm, humid, and wet environments, and may live on public shower room floors or in swimming pools and surrounding areas. If this ailment is managed promptly, the symptoms may not be as severe. If too much time elapses before proper treatment can begin, the uncomfortable symptoms may include bleeding from cracked skin, thick or discolored toenails, or an unpleasant odor emanating from the affected foot. Please consider consulting with a podiatrist for a correct diagnosis.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?
Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.
Prevention
The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:
- Thoroughly washing and drying feet
- Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
- Using shower shoes in public showers
- Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
- Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot
Symptoms
Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:
- Redness
- Burning
- Itching
- Scaly and peeling skin
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.
